about

Besides being my wife and life partner, composer and pianist Chen-Hui Jen has been closest musical collaborator since 2009. Since we first started working together, I have written her four works for piano and electronics, two for solo piano, one for piano and cello, and one for recitation and motion. Despite these many collaborations and many performances together, Chen-Hui has rarely recorded my works. In the middle of March 2020 – soon after our university quickly moved to remote instruction and the entire United Stated entered a period of prolonged self-isolation – Chen-Hui and I began to talk about the idea of preparing a series of concerts that we would live stream from our apartment and recordings that we would make for a series of albums. As part of this idea we decided to finally take the time to carefully record a number of the works I wrote for her.

Besides all of these works being written with Chen-Hui’s piano tone in mind, all of the works on this album also share a similar interest in exploring the inner acoustic properties of specific acoustic sounds. For example, the piano writing for both “unraveling...” and “...spaces to listen to from within (vi)” primarily derives its pitches and relative dynamics from spectral analyses of three Tibetan bells. “stone bells and long reeds spinning in the wind...” derives its title and materials from spectral analyses of two ancient Cambodian stone bells and multiple recordings of Kleng-Ek (Cambodian singing kites) that I made in Cambodia. Finally, the pitch and frequency materials in “...wash yourself of yourself” are all derived from a spectral analysis of the lowest E-flat on the piano and the combination tones one can generate from this analysis. Through these approaches, I’ve been nearly always interested in the almost palpable absence that remains when one approximates and imitates the inner frequency and dynamic properties of sound itself. In a sense, I almost feel the resulting music almost creates a sort meta-listening experience where one can almost observe the object of one’s listening as it disappears in memory and silence.
